The White House disclosed the initiation of federal worker layoffs on the end of the week, following through on prior threats linked to the ongoing US government shutdown, which is set to extend into its third straight week.

Official Announcement and Initial Details

The director of the White House budget office posted on a public platform that “reductions in force have begun,” indicating the government’s procedure for terminating staff.

Although Vought did not specify which agencies were affected, a representative from the Treasury Department stated that layoff warnings had been distributed within that agency. Additionally, a DHS spokesperson indicated that layoffs would take place at the CISA. Moreover, a union representing federal workers confirmed that members at the Department of Education would be affected by the staff cuts.

Union Response and Legal Challenges

Labor representatives warned that the layoffs would have “devastating effects” on public services relied upon by millions of Americans and vowed to contest the actions in the legal system.

Political Standoff and Funding Battle

Lawmakers from the Democratic party have declined to support a Republican-backed bill to reopen the government unless it contains healthcare-centered concessions. Following multiple unsuccessful votes, the Senate’s Republican leaders have adjourned the Senate until the following week, indicating the deadlock is unlikely to be ended before then.

At a press conference, the Republican House speaker, the speaker, blasted opposition lawmakers for rejecting the Republican proposal, which passed in the lower chamber on a near party-line vote.

Judicial and Practical Limits

Last week, labor groups filed for a court injunction to prevent the administration from implementing any reductions in force during the funding gap. Additionally, a federal judge directed the government to disclose details on termination strategies, affected agencies, and whether any federal employees had been recalled to carry out layoffs.

A report contended that a government shutdown restricts the authority of the government to conduct terminations, citing guidance that admitted any long-term staff cuts need to have been initiated prior to the shutdown began.

Impact on Workers

The layoffs took place on the very day that government employees got only a partial paycheck for the end of the previous month but excluding the start of October, since funding expired at the beginning of the period.

Max Stier, the head of the advocacy group, condemned the political stalemate’s effect on government workers.

“It is wrong to make federal employees bear the burden because our leaders in Congress and the White House have not succeeded to keep our federal operations running,” Stier said. The air traffic controllers, VA nurses, smoke jumpers and food inspectors are not at fault for this government shutdown.”

The irony is that lawmakers and senior White House leaders are still receiving salaries amid the shutdown.
