A deadly train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite critical opposition regarding the pace and management of the country's key public works projects.
The accident took place on the Interoceanic Train, a rail link built to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was created to establish an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving economic development in the area.
“We are going to thoroughly investigate the reasons behind this accident,” declared the head of state.
The leader reported that, of the approximately 250 individuals on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in grave condition. The leader stated plans to visit Oaxaca to speak with those impacted.
Key Undertaking of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a central development scheme of the immediate past president, whose time in office ended the prior year. This venture was a hallmark of his government's strategic goals for the southern region.
Another ambitious railway undertaking from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the comprehensive effort to revitalize the economy of a comparatively disadvantaged part of the country.
Building Management and Safety Concerns
The construction of both railway systems was supervised by the armed forces, marking a dramatic expansion of its duties in public infrastructure. They were built at an fast-tracked speed, beating forecasts to be at least partly opened before the end of that presidency.
However, this rushed timetable had concurrently sparked significant apprehensions over operational security.
- Sunday's crash was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
- This includes an earlier accident this month when a train smashed into a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also experienced a couple of non-deadly derailments.
Calls for Audit and Pause
In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the leader of a key rival party demanded an urgent pause in the building and running of all comparable projects.
This pause was proposed pending a thorough safety audit. The party emphasized that the tragedy "requires immediate answers."
In reply, the president asserted that the train had been functioning in complete accordance with all operational standards. Promises were given that the government would be "accountable" in both the construction and running of these national projects.
