The EU could “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it deems “unjustified” visa bans imposed by the United States against five European individuals working on combating digital hatred and misinformation, an EU official has said.
EU Officials Decry US Action as ‘Intimidation’
Officials from Europe including the French president accused Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, following the travel bans targeted figures who have been at the heart of campaigns to introduce laws regulating American tech companies.
“For far too long, European activists have spearheaded organised efforts to coerce US companies to punish US perspectives they oppose,” stated the US secretary of state online. “The current administration will not stand for these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”
Widespread Condemnation Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined France in condemning the move.
The bans were imposed this week on a former EU commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s digital governance law, along with several activists fighting false information, from two in Germany and two in the UK.
A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance
This European legislation is seen by Washington as a form of censorship, while EU authorities contend the rules are necessary to control inflammatory language and disinformation.
This disagreement threatens to become a facet of a much broader ongoing cultural and political conflict involving the current US administration and Europe.
