Users Stopping Weight-Loss Injections Put On Pounds at a Quadrupled Rate Than Dieters

Weight management often requires long-term strategies.

New research suggests that individuals who discontinue new GLP-1 drugs like semaglutide or tirzepatide can put back on reduced body mass far faster than those who stop traditional diet and exercise regimens.

Research printed in a major health publication points out that while overweight individuals can lose about a fifth of their total mass while on the medication, the mass returns at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.

"People purchasing such treatments must be informed of the risk of fast weight regain when the therapy ends," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of recovery implies a reversion to pre-treatment mass within about a year and a half.

Weighing Approaches

The research, which looked at 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the results of GLP-1 agonists with other pills.

The team emphasize that people who shed pounds through dieting usually experience a slower creep back—approximately 100 grams monthly—after stopping.

The Reason for the Fast Regain

Experts propose the mechanism of the jabs accounts for the amplified weight return.

GLP-1 drugs copy a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls appetite.

"Long-term administration of GLP-1 levels far above than the body's typical production might result in the body to produce less of its own natural hormone, and may also reduce sensitivity to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.

"Discontinuation of this medication means hunger is uncontrolled, making excessive eating much more probable."

A Lifelong Issue?

The NHS suggest the jabs for people with obesity-related health risks, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.

Many experts say that, considering the likelihood of relapse, the therapy might need to be long-term.

This perspective is echoed by drug manufacturers, who note that the results "highlight the chronic nature of obesity," akin to managing conditions like hypertension.

Patient Accounts

Individuals who have come off the jabs describe a intense return of appetite.

"It felt as if something flipping and I was suddenly extremely hungry," recalled one woman.

This challenge is exacerbated if users have not established permanent dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.

Growing Use

Figures show that a significant number of people in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with desire continuing to grow.

  • Adoption is higher among women compared to men.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest usage rates.
  • Many obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.

Finally, clinicians stress that while GLP-1 drugs are potent agents for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone solution and lasting health benefits likely depends on integrated behavioural support.
